Designing Learning Experiences That Change Practice
Transforming expert knowledge into structured learning experiences that improve understanding, retention and application
ROLE
- Learning Design
- Curriculum Development
- Stakeholder Management
CONTEXT
Digital learning platform for undergraduate medical education
ORGANIZATION
ScholarRx
Problem
Across multiple curriculum projects at ScholarRx, I worked with subject matter experts to develop digital learning experiences across basic sciences, clinical education, osteopathic medicine, and emerging healthcare topics. Although the subject matter varied, I repeatedly encountered the same challenge.
Healthcare education is often rich in content but poor in learning design. Subject matter experts naturally communicate from the perspective of their discipline, producing material that is scientifically accurate but not always engaging, coherent, or easy to apply in practice.
Approach
Working closely with clinicians, educators, and editorial teams, I transformed expert-written content into structured learning experiences that balanced educational quality with scientific accuracy.
Analyze
Identify gaps in clarity, coherence, and learner engagement.
Restructure
Organize ideas into a coherent learning journey
Simplify
Reduce cognitive load while preserving scientific accuracy
Visualize
Use diagrams and illustrations to reinforce understanding
Engage
Introduce scenarios, questions, reflection prompts to encourage active learning.
Evidence
These examples illustrate recurring design decisions across the curriculum, including connecting theory to practice, introducing evidence-based frameworks, improving information hierarchy, and replacing passive reading with active learning.
What I learned
Small instructional design decisions often have a disproportionate impact on learning
Reordering concepts, introducing a well-placed clinical scenario, or replacing a dense explanation with a visual framework can fundamentally change how learners engage with a topic. Good learning experiences are intentionally designed to reduce cognitive load, strengthen understanding, and help learners translate knowledge into practice.
